Underwater Cleaning up of Sava Lake as a Part of the Campaign “Lets Clean up Serbia”

Earth Day was symbolically celebrated yesterday by underwater cleanup of Sava Lake in Belgrade as a part of the campaign "Let's clean up Serbia". Minister of Environment and Spatial Planning, Mr Oliver Dulic and the chairman of the Olympic Committee Mr Vlade Divac were present at the commencement of this event.

For the second year in a row, 50 divers from Serbian Association for the Underwater Activities together with the Ministry of the Interior took part in the cleaning up. From the bottom of Sava Lake the divers pulled out two truckloads of waste: bottles, cans, tires, a table and a chair, an anchor, as well as a part of the protective fence.

Minister Dulic announced more rigorous measures against the polluters and added that not only bigger penalties but also the change of people's awareness regarding the environmental protection is necessary. He said that the ministry was going to initiate educational campaign on the problems of the living environment. In addition, he reminded that the set of 16 ecological laws waiting to be passed in the Serbian Parliament prescribes ten times higher fines for the polluters.
