The International Earth Day Celebrated Today

Today, in more than 150 countries around the world, people celebrate April 22 - Earth Day. This year's Earth Day marks the launching of the Global Green Generation campaign.  The two-year initiative will culminate on the 40th Anniversary of Earth Day in 2010.

The Green Generation campaign aims to connect ordinary people engaged in individual and collective activities and to allow them to participate in finding a solution to urgent national and global issues, such as climate change or the world's water crisis by the end of next year. Moreover, in December 2009 the decision on a new agreement on climate change, which will substitute the Kyoto Protocol, will be made. Thus, this year's celebration of Earth Day will be aimed at citizens' initiatives related to renewable energy resources that will reduce our common dependency on fossil fuels, the commitment of each and every individual to responsible, sustainable consumption, creation of a new green economy that will lift people out of poverty and introduce the topics on the environmental protection problems in educational system.

The Ministry of Environment and Spatial Planning supports global and individual campaigns aimed at preservation of the environment. With a view to this, the Ministry has launched "Let's clean up Serbia" campaign in cooperation with Serbian citizens, local self-governments, corporations and media. Furthermore, the various types of campaigns such as cleaning up a vast number of wild landfills in Serbia and finding the solution for the problem of waste management have also been planned, as well as the educational campaign on the necessity of environmental protection.

Let us remind you that this year, on Earth Day, there is a set of 16 environmental laws in our Parliament.
