First Stage of Revitalization of the Grand Bačka Canal Completed

img_2962The works on the waste water collection and transportation system from the Grand Bačka Canal have been completed. Currently, the main collector facility is under construction.

On this occasion the Minister of Environment and Spatial Planning Oliver Dulić in the presence of the Minister of Agriculture, Forestry and Water Management Saša Dragin, the President of the Executive Council of the Autonomous Province of Vojvodina Bojan Pajtić and HE Dutch Ambassador to Serbia Ron van Dartel, visited the Grand Bačka Canal in Vrbas within the framework of the campaign "Let's Clean up Serbia".

- Although the Grand Bačka Canal is currently one of the most polluted "hot spots" on the ecological map of Serbia, it shall become the country's development potential by joint efforts of all the participants in this project - said Minister Dulić. He expressed expectation that the ambitious deadline for the completion of the project determined by the working group proved the change of awareness not only among our citizens but also among the decision makers.

The construction of the new wastewater treatment facilities, a new Central Waste Water Treatment Plant and the excavation and treatment of the existing sludge in the most polluted section of the canal - 6 kilometers that run through Vrbas, have been planned to be performed during the following three years.

Funding in the amount of 2 million dollars for the realization of this project has been secured by the Dutch Government and Serbia's first Eco Fund, Ecotopia.
