Presentation of the project Strengthening Administrative Capacities for Implementation of Air Quality Management System in the Republic of Serbia

Twinning project “Strengthening Administrative Capacities for Implementation of Air Quality Management System in the Republic of Serbia” of Ministry of Environment and Spatial Planning was presented today by Mr Adriano Martins, Deputy Head of EC Delegation in the Republic of Serbia, Ms Veronika Hunt Šafránková, Deputy Minister for Environment of Czech Republic, and Mr Ivica Radović, State Secretary in the Ministry of Environment and Spatial Planning of the Republic of Serbia.

- This project, which started at the end of November 2009, will improve the field of air quality protection and management. The main aim is exchanging the information regarding modern trends in that field, helping Serbian experts in the implementation of the law and measuring the air quality in accordance with European legislation- said State Secretary Radović, and added that the project would last for two years.  

The project is funded by European Commission with €1,000,000. The partners of the Republic of Serbia in the realisation of this project are Ministry of Environment of Czech Republic and Hydrometeorological Institute and Federal Ministry for the Environment, Nature Conservation and Nuclear Safety of the Republic of Germany. Twinning Project Leader is Czech Republic, while the Federal Republic of Germany is a Junior Partner.

- Serbia has made a progress within last couple of months. It has adopted so-called green package of laws, among which is the Law on Air Protection which reflects EU standards in that field- emphasised Mr Adriano Martins, Deputy Head of EC Delegation in the Republic of Serbia.

The Project contains four components the realisation of which will improve the field of air quality protection and management in the Republic of Serbia. These are, as follows: developing by-laws in accordance with the provisions of the Law on Air Protection and EU requirements in the field of air protection, revision of existing by-laws brought based on the provisions of the Law on Air protection and development of the Air Protection Strategy and improving the implementation of legislation in air protection field, improved institutional capacities in the field of protecting and improving the air quality and improved cooperation and information exchange among  the institutions having an important role in the field of air quality protection and improvement, improved system of air quality monitoring and established air quality zones.
